HostHatch storage VPS: a terabyte of backup space from $5 a month, with no renewal jump

HostHatch charges $5 a month for 1TB of storage VPS space and scales to 10TB for $38. Full per-terabyte pricing checked against hosthatch.com — and the renewal is the same as the sticker.

Backup storage is the quiet corner of the VPS market where the arithmetic gets brutal. You are not paying for CPU or NVMe IOPS — you are paying for spinning disks and the electricity to keep them turning, and most providers price that space like it is gold. HostHatch does not: its storage VMs start at $5.00 a month for 1TB, and the same monthly figures apply on renewal, because HostHatch bills month to month with no first-term discount to expire.

The full storage ladder, per terabyte

Every plan below was checked against HostHatch's published pricing on 8 October 2026. All plans include 1–2 vCPU cores, 1–2GB of memory and generous bandwidth allowances, so the only variable that matters is capacity:

  • 1TB — $5.00/mo ($5.00 per TB)
  • 2TB — $9.00/mo ($4.50 per TB)
  • 3TB — $12.00/mo ($4.00 per TB)
  • 4TB — $16.00/mo ($4.00 per TB)
  • 5TB — $20.00/mo ($4.00 per TB)
  • 6TB — $24.00/mo ($4.00 per TB)
  • 8TB — $32.00/mo ($4.00 per TB)
  • 10TB — $38.00/mo ($3.80 per TB)

Two things stand out. First, the price per terabyte drops from $5.00 to $3.80 across the range, so the bigger plans are genuinely better value rather than a trap. Second, the steps are nearly linear — every additional terabyte costs roughly $4 — which makes planning simple: budget about $4 per terabyte per month and you will land within a dollar or two of any point on the ladder. Our HostHatch pricing page lists every plan with renewal pricing attached.

How that compares with the market

Major-name storage offerings rarely come close at this level. Hetzner's Storage Boxes are a fine product, but the 5TB BX/VBX tier costs more than HostHatch's 5TB full VM at $20 per month — and a HostHatch storage plan is a complete virtual machine, so you get SSH, snapshots, and the ability to run rsync, Borg, restic or anything else you like, not a file-share service with a fixed feature set.

Against the big clouds the gap is absurd. S3-standard style object storage runs to roughly $23 per TB per month before you pay for egress, and a general-purpose AWS EBS volume costs on the order of $80–90 per TB per month. Even the cheapest dedicated "cloud" storage offerings from mainstream providers sit at $7–10 per TB per month. HostHatch's $3.80–5.00 per TB is in a different category.

Where this fits, and where it does not

A storage VM is not fast storage. These plans run enterprise-grade spinning disks in eight locations, paired with modest compute — perfect for backups, media libraries, archive mirrors and off-site rsync targets, useless as the primary disk for a busy database. That is the point: pair a cheap storage VM with one of the NVMe compute VPS deals on this site and you have fast working storage plus slow, vast, cheap archive storage for a combined bill that most providers would charge for either alone.

The renewal story

Because every HostHatch storage plan bills monthly at a single flat price, there is no renewal shock at all: the price you pay in month one is the price in month thirteen. That is the same flat-billing model we flagged in the InterServer slice pricing and RackNerd renewal analysis, and it remains the single best predictor of whether a "cheap" VPS will actually stay cheap. Compute buyers after big RAM should also look at the HostUS month-to-month plans — but at $3.80 per terabyte per month, HostHatch is the reference point for bulk space.
